Webinar: Michigan Broadband/Telecommunications
Pure Michigan Business Connect (PMBC) is partnering with Connected Nation Michigan, Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (PTAC), and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Market Development team to help Michigan’s Internet Service Providers (ISPs) procure the necessary commodities, (e.g. fiber-optic cable, splice closures, concrete vaults, handholes, etc.) needed to deploy new broadband networks in Michigan and ensure the once-in-a-generation opportunities of the new IIJA and other funds can be realized to connect all Michiganders.

The partner group will host a panel discussion on August 10, 2022, on the Connect Space virtual event platform. This virtual session will include the Michigan High-Speed Internet Office and 2-3 Internet Service Providers (ISPS) / Broadband Prime Contractors. The discussion will include current and projected supply-chain needs, procurement processes, and anticipated shortages.

PMBC will open a registration form for interested businesses to collect general company information, and specific capabilities relevant to the anticipated broadband projects. Suppliers will be asked to upload a capability statement if available; if suppliers need assistance creating or updating a capability statement, they will be encouraged to reach out to their local PTAC.

Registration + Capability Statement
Registration to attend is required and available at https://www.connect.space/webi...

During registration, you will be asked to upload a capability statement for your company if you are a business looking to connect with prime contractors. If you do not have a capability statement, Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (PTACs) are available to help prepare or update one. You can find your local PTAC by using the following link: <a href="https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.c...

As Michigan works through numerous issues because of the COVID-19 pandemic, broadband connectivity has become more critical than ever in accessing telework opportunities, telehealth, and many other value-added economic activities for the state.
To address the state’s broadband challenges, in October 2020, Governor Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist announced the formation of the Connecting Michigan Taskforce, an interagency working group tasked with aligning the work being done by state agencies and other departments related to high-speed internet access.
The Taskforce has been made aware that global supply chain issues in the telecommunications industry are currently impacting the cost and timeliness of network construction in Michigan. This squeeze on resources is expected to continue given the recent passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that includes $65B for broadband network deployment across the country. Coupled with other existing connectivity funding programs such as the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund, USDA ReConnect, NTIA Infrastructure Grant Program, Coronavirus Capital Projects Fund, and the Connecting Michigan Communities Grant program, timely and cost-conscious materials acquisition will be critical to ensure Michigan’s Internet Service Providers can deploy their networks expediently and efficiently.
